Dracaena draco, or Canarian dragon tree, is a subtropical tree of the Dracaena genus, native to the Canary Islands, Cape Verde, and Madeira. The dragon tree has a high symbolic and cultural value in the Canary Islands, and is also very attractive as an ornamental plant. For ancient Aboriginal people, this tree had magical properties. Its sap, which turns red upon contact with air, was traded for its medicinal properties and its use in dyes and varnishes.
