Legend has it that the two tall towers that rise above Las Palmas Cathedral replaced the three enormous palm trees that the conquistador Juan Rejón left uncut in the area where the Castilians set up their military camp in 1478, and which ultimately gave the city of Las Palmas its name. The Castilian nobleman decided to cut down the grove of trees that would become the capital of Gran Canaria to spot Canarian warriors, in addition to using the wood as a palisade to repel their incursions. The three towering palm trees were also intended to serve as rudimentary beacons for ships approaching the coast. Years later, beginning in 1485, construction began on the same site on the Cathedral of Santa Ana in Las Palmas by order of the Catholic Monarchs. The enormous towers would replace the palm trees as guides for ships approaching the city's coastline. More than 500 years later, it is still considered the most important structure in the Canary Islands.
